The Inspiration
Find a picture of the vase that you would like. I wanted to purchase the new Studio McGee vases from Target.
The problem is that they are new and sold out in stores and online. My best chance of having this vase for fall is to make one that looks like the one I want.
Supplies
You can use any colors but these are the colors I used.
Craft Smart Paints in
Golden Yellow, Yellow Ochre, or Mustard colored paint
Craft Paint Brush These are my favorites.
Rust spray paint for the base coat.
Find a vase that is the shape you desire. I first try to find something that I already own. If I don’t have anything that I can use, I shop the thrift stores. Thrift stores always have an abundance of vases. I thought that the lip around my thrifted vase looked like the vase in my inspiration picture.
How to paint the rustic vase
Paint the vase with spray paint in a terra cotta or burnt orange color. The only reason that I spray a base coat is so that my craft paint will adhere to the vase well. Spray paint will also help give the vase good coverage.
Paint the vase with a coat of burnt orange craft paint.
Add dimension and the appearance of texture by using several colors of craft paint.
I started with the golden yellow paint.
Lightly dab the paint randomly onto the vase.
Soften the paint by dabbing the wet paint with a cloth or paper towel.
Repeat the same with the other paint colors.
Randomly dab all of the colors on the vase. Soften all the colors by blotting with the cloth. You can’t mess it up. The messier it looks, the better.
This project is so much fun. I hope that this inspires you to make a DIY Rustic Vase for your home. It is an easy and inexpensive way to decorate your home.

I love that you found a vase in your desired shape at a thrift shop! I shop in thrift stores all the time. Nicely done! I think you should use three books instead of two and cover them in the same fabric as the pillows you made. That is, IF you have fabric left over. Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing!
