My son is in college and he talks about how he will always remember me picking him up after the first day of school with a special snack and drink every year. It made him feel like the first day of school was special. Serving the after-school snacks on a board is perfect for families with several kids in school. It will be a special time for the kids to sit around the table and talk about their first day while they enjoy eating all the snacks. This after-school snack board can be a new tradition for your family to enjoy each year. It will give the kids something to look forward to when they come home from their first day of school. A back-to-school charcuterie board will also be good to have when your kids have friends over during the end of summer.

I took a class in culinary school called Garde Manger meaning the art and craft of the cold kitchen. My favorite thing was learning to prepare charcuterie boards and this was before charcuterie was popular.

What is a charcuterie board?

A charcuterie board is a group of appetizers served on a wooden board or stone slab  Charcuterie is pronounced “shaar·koo·tr·ee”. It is a board that features a selection of preserved foods, cold meats, cheeses, dipping sauces, fruits, vegetables, and crackers or bread. Charcuterie boards make a stunning display when entertaining or at special events.  We are now seeing people getting creative and putting different spins on the original charcuterie boards. Using a board to serve several foods is a good way to use less dishes or serveware.

Types of charcuterie boards

Mexican or taco boards

Hamburger and hot dog boards

Snack boards

How to create a back-to-school-board

snacks for kids

  • Start with a board or tray. You can use a wooden cutting board, a lazy susan, a platter, or anything that you have on hand. My favorite places to find boards for charcuterie is Amazon, Target, HomeGoods, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx.
  • Add small dishes for food that you want to be contained or displayed in a dish. The best place to find small dishes is a good thrift store. I found my dish that looks like a ruler and the colorful round plates at my favorite thrift store. Also, I like to pick up seasonal items for my boards such as small dishes shaped like bunnies for easter or pumpkin dishes for Fall at HomeGoods and Target. These stores are also a good place to find unique snacks.
  • Choose your snacks. Basically, choose what your kids love to eat! You can add healthy fruits and vegetables along with their favorite snacks or candy. The first day of school is supposed to be special so I always add some sweets.
