Valentine’s Day is coming up and these roses made from candy are perfect. These roses are so easy to make, and they look just like the fondant roses made by cake decorators. You can add these to your homemade cupcakes, or add them to store bought cupcakes. These candy roses applied to a cake is absolutely beautiful. You could also make a few to put in a bouquet if you do not want to use cupcakes or a cake. This project is also fun and easy for kids.
All you need are four mini tootsie rolls to make a chocolate rose. You need one green fruit roll-up and one red fruit roll-up for the red rose. I could not find the green ones so I cut a green piece out of a multi-colored one.
Shape the tootsie roll in the shape of a band-aid using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter.
Cut each one into three parts. You will only use the curved ends for the rose. Save the center square for the leaf.
Wrap the next piece around the center.
Keep wrapping the pieces around the rose overlapping the previous one. You can shape the rose petals with your fingers as you go.
Cut your leaf out of the square piece with a pizza cutter or a knife. Create the veins by pressing a knife softly into the candy leaf.

This is such a clever idea!
I need to make cupcakes for a relief society meeting coming up, I think I might have to try this. I think the ladies would love it (:
Sherry Cole says
I hope you try it! This is actually how cake decorators make flowers out of fondant. This way taste better, cheaper, and much easier! Thanks!

I am a first grade teacher and I am going to try this activity with my class!
Thank you!

Great! I think the kids will love it! Let me know how it turns out!

This is a great idea. I haven’t seen the chocolate tootsies… maybe we don’t have them in Australia. But I think I could use My fudge recipe to make a very thin strip I could use. Another idea I thought of is that if you want black roses then maybe licorice straps would work well too! 😉
Teresa says
I love this idea, I can totally see it working for decorating all sorts of cakes!
If you can, I would love for you to share this post over at the Really Crafty link party that is live right now! (http://keepingitrreal.blogspot.com.es/2016/01/the-really-crafty-link-party-1-is-live.html).

For a while I worked as a cake designer, I would help the client design their cakes and then the artists at the bakery would take our ideas and turn them into works of art. The process for making flowers was one that took tons of practice, and here you are making it accessible for those of us who aren’t as practiced. These little roses are so pretty! And I love tootsie rolls, I would be all over these! Pinned!
Sherry says
Thanks Nikki! I use to make cakes and made these from fondant. Fondant is expensive and these are super cheap and inexpensive.

I know that when my friends from the bakery visit me this spring, we’ll be giving this a try together! 🙂
