These cute roses look exactly like the fondant roses that cake decorators make but these are made from tootsie rolls and fruit roll-ups

These roses made from candy has always been one of my top performing post ever! It is because they are so easy and fun to make.

Valentine’s Day is coming up and these roses made from candy are perfect. These roses are so easy to make, and they look just like the fondant roses made by cake decorators.  You can add these to your homemade cupcakes, or add them to store bought cupcakes. These candy roses applied to a cake is absolutely beautiful. You could also make a few to put in a bouquet if you do not want to use cupcakes or a cake. This project is also fun and easy for kids.

All you need are four mini tootsie rolls to make a chocolate rose.  You need one green fruit roll-up and one red fruit roll-up for the red rose.  I could not find the green ones so I cut a green piece out of a multi-colored one.

Heat four mini tootsie rolls in the microwave unwrapped for 5 to 10 seconds.  This will make the candy easy to work with.  Only do four at a time because the candy will harden a little if you wait too long.  Roll the candy flat with a rolling pin.

Shape the tootsie roll in the shape of a band-aid using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter.

Cut each one into three parts.  You will only use the curved ends for the rose.  Save the center square for the leaf.

The first piece will be the center of the rose.  Fold it over and press softly so it will stick together.

Wrap the next piece around the center.

Keep wrapping the pieces around the rose overlapping the previous one.  You can shape the rose petals with your fingers as you go.

Cut your leaf out of the square piece with a pizza cutter or a knife.  Create the veins by pressing a knife softly into the candy leaf.

You can press a toothpick in the center if you need it to stick into a cupcake.
The fruit roll-up roses are super quick to make.  You do not have to heat these.

Cut a one-inch piece of the roll-up and fold in half.

Roll until you reach the end, rolling lower as you go.

Cut a piece of the green fruit roll-up in a triangle shape and place around the rose.
These cupcake toppers would be such a fun thing to make at a birthday party, Valentine party or at a sleepover.  There are so many things you can do with these roses made from candy.

I hope you try it! This is actually how cake decorators make flowers out of fondant. This way taste better, cheaper, and much easier! Thanks!

This is a great idea. I haven’t seen the chocolate tootsies… maybe we don’t have them in Australia. But I think I could use My fudge recipe to make a very thin strip I could use. Another idea I thought of is that if you want black roses then maybe licorice straps would work well too! 😉

For a while I worked as a cake designer, I would help the client design their cakes and then the artists at the bakery would take our ideas and turn them into works of art. The process for making flowers was one that took tons of practice, and here you are making it accessible for those of us who aren’t as practiced. These little roses are so pretty! And I love tootsie rolls, I would be all over these! Pinned!

I really love this idea. I’d never thought to try it and I’m so glad that you did. I used to be really interested in cake decorating when I worked at a bakery. Since then, I’ve stopped trying as hard to make my baked goods pretty. But, this makes things so much easier! I know that when my friends from the bakery visit me this spring, we’ll be giving this a try together! 🙂
