I am so excited to participate in the fabulous One Room Challenge also know as ORC! For those of you that do not know what that is, Linda from the blog Calling it home hosts this One Room Challenge event in April and October and invites design bloggers will join her in renovating a space. It gives me the motivation to get a room cleaned up, cleaned out, and decorated! Here goes the One Room Challenge-Week One-Home Office Join me and follow the weekly makeover until the reveal in 6 weeks.
I have participated in several $100 room makeover challenges before but I have never been brave enough to participate in the One Room Challenge where there is no budget and you really need to do your best work. I have been blown away by the room transformations that I have seen in this challenge.
I started photographing my home office for the “before” pictures and my husband passed by and said, “This is one of those room makeovers for $100, right?” I laughed and laughed.
Truthfully, I have always decorated my home by keeping the cost as low as possible. I do have expensive taste but my number one priority is living debt free so to accomplish this I have to be a smart shopper and also a diyer. You can save so much money by doing the work yourself so that leaves you more money to spend on the decor.
Home Office-Before
And this is the room where our family has spent most of their time, our home office! My daughter now has a full-time job and my 17-year-old son works and goes to school so I am the only one using the office. This space will become the office of my dreams! I want all things gold, white, and a touch of blush. I want it to be elegant and bright.
Our house was built in 1993 and we have lived here for 14 years now. I love this house because it is one level without any steps. We have a good size kitchen with a large table for entertaining. About six years ago, we decided to turn our dining room that was never used, to a home office and it was one of the best home decisions that we have made. My family is always gathering in this room and doing homework or they are using the computer. We left our old dining table because we love to play games in this room and because my kitchen table is always set (blogger life).
I will repaint the wall first. Our bookcases are from a scratch and dent tent sale and they are over 10 years old. I am actually planning on painting the bookcases gloss white and changing the hardware to gold because the bookcases are so well made. If I am not pleased with the painted bookcase, I will purchase 2 new ones. I want to move the bookcases to each side of the large window. My plan is to do a cool wall treatment that will be behind the bookcases for a focal point. I will wait and see what everything looks like when I get to that point. We have a hodgepodge of file cabinets and a couple of beat up desks that will be donated. I am planning on purchasing a new white with gold desk and moving it to the center of the room. I am also adding a white fur office chair, of course!
I will be purchasing a sputnik light fixture that I have been wanting ever since I saw it. My DIY wall ledges will stay and they will get a fresh coat of white paint. I am going to remove all the pictures and I will be adding new frames and pictures. I found the white file cabinets at my favorite thrift store and they are brand new so I plan on placing a long white board across the file cabinets for a work area. The mixture of odd chairs will be donated as well. I am planning on purchasing a cute chair for the corner in blush velvet upholstery fabric. I will be decorating my office with gold and white office supplies. I plan on making the home office beautiful but I know that I will have to make this office functional or I will not be happy.

Next week, I will be painting the bookcases and recovering the office chair. Be sure and visit all the other’s that are participating in the One Room Makeover Challenge!
