It is Week 4 for the $100 Room Challenge where I am making over a Jack and Jill Bathroom. I cannot spend more than $100 so I will be doing only one side of the bathroom, Jill’s side. This room is a challenge because we had a leak in the bathroom and the floor has to be replaced. Since this bath is not used that often, I am happy tiling a floor on a budget. This means that my husband and I will do the work ourselves. I try not to involve my husband in my room makeovers because he works so hard at his job but I will definitely need him to help me do the floor. I previously explained that I am planning on spending no money except for what I will spend on the floor. After tiling the floor, I will see what I have left in the budget. Even though I will use things I already own, this bathroom will be completely transformed.
Room Before
The carpet in the bathroom is horrible so I can’t wait for a new floor.
We removed the carpet and the cultured marble two weeks ago. I have tiled many things. I have tiled a backsplash and I have tiled shower before but I discovered that tiling a floor is a totally different beast.
At our local salvage store, we found marble looking tile in the size and color that we wanted. Then we both went to the University of YouTube and watched many videos to learn how to tile a floor. This is not a tutorial. I repeat, this is not a tutorial. We are newly trained.
Seriously, we did a lot of research and we talked to people who have installed tile floors and we felt confident that we could do this project ourselves.
I am thankful that my husband is a perfectionist when it comes to projects like this. He is willing to go very slow to make sure that it is done correctly. We had professionals install our floor at our beach house and the tiles rock and has cracked in places and we do not want that to happen again.
We did a practice run and laid and cut the tile before we secured it with mortar.
After a tiring weekend, the mortar and the tile are down. I know that I can grout by myself so I will work on that this week. Doing projects yourself is hard work but it is worth it. You can feel proud that you did it and you can save your family so much money. Plus, I think it adds value to your home.
