Learn how to make a plastic urn look like aged cement. This is an easy way to update the urns in your garden or porch. You can paint these urns in about an hour.

I really love old cement planters and urns in my yard. The texture and colors of aged and weathered cement are beautiful to me.  So I  purchased 2 containers from one of my favorite stores. They were $70 for two which isn’t really a bad price. I set them out on the porch and they looked pretty good, not great. They were not what I pictured using on my front porch. I did not take a picture of the containers that I purchased.

The old plastic urn

As I was taking the old plastic urns to the shed, I realized that they were the shape of the ones that I had wanted but could not afford.

There is no reason that I can’t paint my old plastic planters to look like the ones I really want. Plus, I don’t have to walk out to the shed and store my old large urns. Also, I will return the containers to the store.

TIP: I like to have a picture of a cement urn or planter that I like close by so that I can look and try to copy the colors on the urn.

Supplies

Plastic Urn

Gray Spray Paint in Satin or Flat finish

Craft Paint in white or cream colors. I used antique white craft paint.

Gray craft paint optional

Instructions for painting the plastic urn

spray paint the plastic urn

Paint the plastic urn gray with spray paint. My urns were painted gray years ago so I skipped this step.

Paint the urn with white or cream paint

Using a brush, paint the urn with a light-colored paint.

Do not try to get complete coverage of paint on the pot. You want the base color (gray) to peak through.

Add gray paint over the white where needed.

Add gray paint over the white where needed or desired.

Painted urn

I am loving the look of my painted urn. The gray paint peaking through gives the urn texture and looks aged.

If the two urns look too different, you can add more light-colored or gray paint.
