Chunky knitted throws and pillows are the rage right now! I will show you how to knit a chunky pillow for beginners and also for experienced knitters. This pillow is knitted with chunky yarn, extra large knitting needles, and uses only the knit and purl stitches. This project is so simple that you don’t even need a pattern.

I love the chunky knitted pillows, throws, and blankets that I am seeing everywhere. These chunky knitted items look so cozy and warm for the fall and winter seasons. I know many people love arm knitting pillows and blankets but I am old school and I want to use knitting needles. When I was growing up, I walked to a knit shop with my friends after school and the shop owner taught us how to knit. Knitting brings back great memories for me.

I used 3 skeins chunky yarn. The net weight is 3.5 oz. and the skein is 54 yards. You could use any chunky yarn that you would like. I used size 35 knitting needles. You will need a 16 x 16 pillow form to insert into your knitted project or use a pillow that is the same color as your yarn.

The beauty of using chunky yarn and large knitting needles is that is super quick to knit and you can knit this pillow in a couple of hours. I love to take something like this project with me for times that we going on road trips and my husband is driving. By the time I get where I am going, I have knitted a pillow!

How to Knit a Chunky Pillow

This project involves casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, and binding off. If you do not know how to do these stitches, you can search them on YouTube. There are many videos that are only one or two minutes long and I also do this occasionally.

Let’s Knit!

Cast on 30 stitches.

This project will be knitted in the stockinette stitch.

Row 1: knit this row.

Row 2 purl this row.

Repeat this for 58 rows or until you have knitted your desired size.

Bind off.

Once you start knitting these beautiful pillows, you will want to knit more. These pillows will be great to give as gifts this Christmas!  You can also visit favecrafts and find more beautiful patterns for knitted projects. I am thrilled to have my table runner featured at favecrafts.com.  Let me know in the comments if you have any questions and I respond quickly.
