I have been dreaming of creating a beautiful outdoor space with an outdoor kitchen for several years. When I decided to makeover our porch for the One Room Challenge, I started planning this kitchen.

Since we will be purchasing new outdoor furniture for the space, we wanted to build this outdoor kitchen without spending a lot of money. We accomplished this because we are using our current grill and also leftover granite from a kitchen remodel that was done years ago. The entire kitchen ended up costing us less than $200.

How We Designed the Kitchen
I saved our old granite for this project so we designed the space using our granite tops and our stainless cabinet doors.

We are bargain hunters and we love to shop at salvage stores. The stainless doors for around $20 each. We found a refrigerator at the same store for $8. It has a big dent in the back but will not be visible.

The kitchen is built in two separate pieces with the rolling grill in the center. We did not close the grill in the cabinets in case of a fire or if we purchase a new grill one day.

We were careful to keep the frame squared and also level so the granite would sit perfectly.

To keep the cost down, we used scrap wood where we could.

Another place that we saved money is using leftover cedar from a previous project.

A frame was built to go under our second piece of granite.

You can see how we can roll the grill in and out.

Boards were added to the back of the kitchen.
Painting the DIY Outdoor Kitchen

The wood is painted with exterior satin black paint. I first tried to stain the wood but quickly found out that Minwax stain can’t be used for outdoors. The black paint actually looked much better than the stain.

The DIY Outdoor Kitchen that we built is my favorite space at our lake house. I love to entertain and cook for my guest and this kitchen is perfect!
