Make a DIY Christmas Ornament Topiary for your porch like the ones from high end stores for way less money. This beautiful DIY Christmas ornament topiary is made with $2.50 rubber balls and Dollar Store rolls of duct tape. This project is so much fun to make and even a beginner can make these.

I have seen a Christmas Ornament Topiary for sale online from $300 to $900 each. Using supplies from Walmart and the Dollar Tree, they can be made for $13 each not including paint and glue. I searched for ornament topiaries online to get an idea of how I wanted my topiaries to look. Then I chose the colors and patterns that I will be using. I will show you how I painted my ornament balls.
Supplies for 2 DIY Christmas Ornament Topiaries
6 balls from Walmart
6 rolls of duct tape from Dollar Tree
2 gold ornaments from Dollar Tree (optional) for topper
2 red ornaments from Dollar Tree (optional) for topper
Frog tape to tape off your design or paint lines
Leveler
gold round stickers (optional)
TIP
Try to let paint and glue dry well before continuing to the next step. If possible, let glue dry overnight.
Step 1
Paint the balls the color of your choice with spray paint. I have found spray paint adheres well to the balls. Sit the balls on a bucket to paint the balls easily.
Step 2
Paint your balls however you desire them to look.
Smallest ball
I used a measuring tape to make sure my lines were spaced evenly and then drew the lines with a Sharpie.
After painting black lines, I outlined the lines with gold paint. You can also use a gold paint pen or marker.
Medium ball
Instead of painting gold dots, I purchased gold stickers from Hobby Lobby. They were around $2 for 24 stickers. Super easy!
Large ball
The large ball was very easy also. Tape off your stripe with painters tape and paint.
Step 3
Paint the rolls of duct tape metallic gold to look like the tops of ornaments.
Step 4
If you desire a topper, you can purchase ornaments from the dollar store. Remove the ball ornament top and glue the 2 ornaments together.
Step 5
This was the most difficult part and I have done the troubleshooting so you don’t have to. I had to figure out a way to make the topiaries stable and not fall or blow over. I had to figure out a way to make the balls sit straight and not lean. Also, the topiaries are going to be moved into the attic to store until next year so I needed to make them easy to transport and store.
First, I placed a piece of scrap wood in the bottom of a bucket for weight. I did not show this step in a picture.
Glue the ball to the bucket. Gorilla Glue is the best glue that I have found and I have used it for years. Let the glue dry very well before continuing to the next step.
Step 6
Glue the painted roll of duct tape to the top of the ball. Try your best to center the duct tape and use a leveler to make sure it is level.
It is very important to have each roll of duct tape level so that your balls will sit straight up. Let this ball and duct tape dry overnight if possible.
Step 7
Repeat for each ball.
Step 8
My husband felt like I needed to something to stabilize the balls better and he is right. He glued a piece of wood to the back to keep the balls from moving. I removed the tape after the glue dried.
It has been 7 weeks since I made the DIY Christmas Ornament Topiary and set them out on my porch. The topiaries have been blown by the wind and they have remained perfectly stable. I am so pleased with the topiaries and they look beautiful.
